What is counselling?
Counselling is more that just a friendly chate about problems you might be facing and it will not necessarity change your personal circumstances. Counselling will, however, enable you focus on your own thoughts, behaviours and perspectives. It may help change the way you think, feel and react to situations you are finding difficult to deal with. I may help you identify specific goals and more importantly, look at ways in which you might achieve those plans.
There are a wide variety of counselling techniques that I use and often in combination. Two that I often use are "Person Centred Counselling" and "Cognitive Behaviour Therapy" or more commonly known as "CBT", I will be happy to explain the various techniques but more information is available on the buttons.
The Counselling Process
The process begins with the Assessement to formulate a treatment plan. The counselling then takes place over 6 to 8 sessions. During those sessions I will help you focus on past events in your life and on changing your thoughts, your resultant feelings an behaviours so that you can lead a better life. We will do this by looking at and discussing the problems that you bring to the sessions, we will focus on what needs to be changed and you will, by a series of small steps, work towards being able to make these changes. You may also be asked to do some work between sesions. You can also, if you wish, keep a notebook to jot down things that happen in the session and between the sessions.
Is Counselling Confidential?
Counselling is confidential with rare exceptions. I am an independent counsellor and am bound by the Code of Ethics of the BACP that provide strict rules on client confidentiality. The rare exception relates to a client who may provide information that indicates they are very likely or currently causing grave harm to themselves, others or children in which case I have a legal duty to pass on that information. Should this be necessary then it would only be with the full knowledge and undertsanding of the client.
